Airbus Imposes Cold-Weather Takeoff Restrictions for Aircraft Equipped with Pratt & Whitney Engines
Airbus has introduced takeoff restrictions in extreme cold weather for certain aircraft models powered by Pratt & Whitney engines. An Airbus spokesperson confirmed a report by aviation outlet aeroTELEGRAPH, stating that existing ground engine operation procedures have been updated to address freezing conditions.
Under the revised guidelines, takeoffs are restricted for Pratt & Whitney-powered aircraft in conditions such as freezing fog and visibility below 150 meters. Airbus noted that it remains in close contact with affected airline customers, while the engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney is working toward a solution.
A320neo and A321neo Families Affected
Air Astana, one of the impacted carriers, confirmed that the new limitations apply to the A320neo, A321neo, and A321LR models. The airline said, “Airbus has imposed restrictions on the departure of these aircraft during conditions of freezing fog and visibility below 150 meters. Such weather conditions are common at Almaty International Airport during the winter season.”
Pratt & Whitney has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
Earlier this month, senior executives at the engine manufacturer stated that they were in discussions with Airbus regarding engine supply for the next three years, highlighting the importance of planning amid increased production targets for the A320neo family.
